Puppies House Training

There's nothing quite like having puppies in the house, especially when you also have children. They can be constantly amusing and just plain fun to watch. However, who loves the idea of puppies and house training? Obviously the answer would be no one, since puppies may take some time to learn a proper bathroom routine. And of course you can't wrap them in a protective diaper until they learn the way you can children!

Going through puppies' house training can be tedious and frustrating for even the most patient of owners, and some may even feel like throwing in the towel and giving their puppy back to the shelter or pet store. Before you do that, why not consider some quick tips on how to make this entire process go quicker and easier on everyone?

Be Consistent

Probably the number one mistake pet owners make when it comes to puppies' house training is that they're not consistent. If you're tired after a long day at work and don't feel like cleaning up a mess or taking the puppies outside, this is understandable. However it's also dangerous and can set your training back weeks or months.

Puppies need to understand that using the house for their bathroom is unacceptable each and every time. They won't learn this if you don't teach them each and every time! If you skip an opportunity for training or let them get away with a mess in the house even once, they won't get the message of what is right and what is unacceptable.

This can be difficult if you're busy with other things but it might be good to enlist some help. If there are others in the house that are taking responsibility for the puppies, they too should help with the puppies' house training! Have them scold the puppies for a mess and take them outside to spend time with them. No doubt there are others in the home that can clean up after the puppies as well! This will make it easier for you to stay consistent with training and will make it quicker and easier overall.

Reward the Puppies

How often do you reward your puppies when going through the puppies' house training? If it's not as much as you scold them, then you're missing out on half of the training you should be putting them through! Puppies need to learn not only what they should avoid in the home but also need to learn what they should be doing when it is time to use the bathroom.

When you take the puppies outside and they do their business, be sure to reward them with treats and verbal praise. They will associate doing their business outside with that reward and that's what they'll continue to do. Keep up this reward system for at least a month after they're trained so they don't revert to old habits. If you do these things your puppies' house training will go as quickly and easily as possible.
